The Artist's Journey: Meet Dr. Portia

Meet Dr. Portia Rawles, Artist, Author, Speaker, Licensed Clinical Psychologist

The art world may describe me as an emerging artist, but I see myself differently. I am a returning artist—one who has found her way back home after a long and purposeful journey. Mine is not the story of beginning again, but of returning with a richer vision, deeper wisdom, and a more profound understanding of what it means to be human.

After earning my degree in Fine Arts from Stanford University in 1986, I immersed myself in painting, drawing, and photography. I exhibited my work in local galleries, participated in juried exhibitions, and spent countless hours exploring the language of color, line, texture, and form. Art was not simply something I created; it was the way I understood myself and interpreted the world.

When I completed my doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2001, my life's calling expanded. My canvas shifted from stretched linen to the interior landscapes of the human spirit. While I continued to sketch and draw throughout those years, my creative energy became devoted to helping people navigate trauma, grief, identity, resilience, and transformation. For more than two decades, I sat with individuals, couples, families, and communities during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. I witnessed despair give way to hope, fragmentation move toward integration, and suffering gradually transform into resilience.

Looking back, I realize I never truly stopped being an artist.

Instead of painting emotional landscapes, I was helping people reshape them. Instead of mixing pigments, I was helping individuals blend broken experiences into coherent narratives of healing. The therapy room became another kind of studio, where every conversation revealed the complexity, beauty, and resilience of the human experience. My work as a psychologist refined my ability to observe what often remains unseen—the subtle movements of emotion, the hidden architecture of belief, the weight of memory, and the extraordinary capacity of the human spirit to heal and transcend.

My years as an educator of future clinical psychologists deepened this perspective even further. Each student arrived carrying a unique constellation of experiences, cultural identities, strengths, wounds, and aspirations. Watching them grow into self-aware clinicians reinforced a truth I had witnessed throughout my career: transformation is never merely intellectual; it is deeply personal. We become capable of helping others only as we courageously engage our own humanity.

Now I find myself returning home to the studio.

Yet this home is both familiar and entirely new. Time has changed me. Experience has changed me. The world has changed. I return carrying decades of stories entrusted to me, countless moments of witnessing courage and vulnerability, and a profound appreciation for the sacred complexity of being human. The brushes feel familiar in my hands, but the vision guiding them has been forever transformed.

Today, I no longer paint simply what I see. I paint what I have witnessed. I paint what I have learned. I paint what I have felt. Every brushstroke is informed by decades spent listening deeply to others while continually confronting my own growth, questions, and becoming.

Returning to art has not been a departure from my life's work—it has been its continuation. My paintings are the natural convergence of my identities as artist, psychologist, educator, and seeker. They are visual reflections of the journeys I have been privileged to witness, the transformations I have experienced myself, and my enduring belief that healing, growth, and transcendence remain possible for every human being.
